Leaking Toilet Tank Flapper Valve

Leaking Toilet Tank Flapper Valve. And if your toilet is leaking, the probable cause (the most common, in fact), is a worn flapper valve. If the water turns color, then you've got a leak coming from the tank into the toilet bowl.

The flapper (aka flush valve seal) is the plug that falls against the drain hole (flush valve drain seat) on the bottom of the tank and holds water in until the next time you flush. The cause of a slow toilet leak is often a flapper that has hardened with age and no longer makes a watertight seal. Now, press the toilet handle down until the water drains out.

Replacing the flush valve and gaskets are recommended.

This may occur because the trip lever arm may be binding, water may be overflowing into the flush valve overflow tube or the flush valve flapper/canister seal may be worn. The flush valve (aka douglas valve) is what the flapper sits on. The problem is usually with the flapper or flush valve assembly. Turn off the handle, and flush the toilet to empty out the tank.
